Since the launch of the IKS (Intelligent Kill Switch) system, multiple attempted vehicle thefts have been successfully prevented. In each of these cases, the system prevented the vehicle from starting, preventing the vehicle from being stolen.
The most recent incident occurred on the night of July 1, 2026. A 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid equipped with the IKS system was targeted by thieves in the Quebec City area.
The suspects smashed a rear window to gain access to the vehicle. They then allegedly used different techniques in an attempt to bypass the vehicle’s security systems and start it.
Despite their efforts, the vehicle remained completely immobilized thanks to the IKS system.
Unable to start the vehicle, the individuals attempted to physically access the ignition system. Moments later, the vehicle’s audible and visual alarms went off, waking up the owners as well as several neighbors, some of whom saw the suspects fleeing. The vehicle, on the other hand, never left its location.
As soon as we were informed of the incident, our team traveled to the scene to meet with the owners, assess the damage, and collaborate with the police officer assigned to the investigation.
Beyond assessing the property damage, it was important for us to support the owners following this attempted theft.
This intervention also allowed us to document the incident and gather information on the methods used by the thieves. These observations contribute to the continuous improvement of the IKS system, helping ensure it remains effective against constantly evolving vehicle theft techniques.
No system can prevent a break-in attempt or the property damage that can result. On the other hand, IKS’s primary objective is to prevent what matters most: the theft of the vehicle.
In this case, several features of the IKS system helped to protect the vehicle. The immobilizer system prevented it from starting despite the suspects’ attempts, while audible alarms went off, quickly alerting the owners and nearby residents.
The damage was mainly limited to replacing a window and completing a few minor repairs. The owners kept their vehicle, avoiding the delays, administrative procedures, lost time, and financial consequences often associated with vehicle theft.
This latest thwarted theft attempt adds to a growing number of cases where the IKS system prevented the vehicle from starting, further demonstrating its effectiveness. It illustrates the role that active immobilization can play in limiting the risk of theft.
The risk of being targeted by a vehicle theft attempt can never be completely eliminated. However, a system designed to prevent the vehicle from starting can provide an additional layer of protection against current theft methods. It is this approach that guides the continuous development of the IKS system.
